SUMA celebrates 25 years

18.10.2019

Celebrating a quarter of a century of an ambitious path and remarkable challenges overcome was the reason that led SUMA to gather around two hundred guests at the Monastery of Batalha, on the 11th of October. The choice of the place was of particular significance, Batalha municipality being the company’s first contract, in 1995, and the place where the “SUMA project” started to take shape.

Characterized by a program dedicated to strengthening ties and corporate values, the presentation of the faces of workers, ex-cadres, and teams from the different geographies where SUMA services are implemented – literally representing those who face the organization every day -, it was complemented by the performance of coach Pedro Vieira, on the issue of problem solving and the importance of insight in the processes of personal and organizational development.

In terms of theatrical entertainment, 25 SUMA years were revisited in 25 minutes, creating parallels between the Iberian partnership that constitutes it, the most relevant dates of its journey and the battle of Aljubarrota that, in 1385, opposed Portuguese troops commanded by D. João I of Portugal and his constable D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, and the Castilian army and its allies, led by João I of Castela, and whose success of the Portuguese faction resulted in the building of the venue for the event.

Addressing those present, as CEO of SUMA, Manuel Costa also had the opportunity to refer to the “Iberian wedding” resulting from the organization, highlighting the support of shareholders, the view of the previous and the present management exercises, and the dedication and adaptability of the human mass that composes it as factors for its success. The excellence of the services provided, attested by the attribution of national and international prizes, and the relationships of trust and fruitful articulation between public and private services created between the organization and its customers also deserved to be highlighted in this intervention.

Reinforcement and recognition messages were also given by António Mota, chairman of the board of directors of Mota-Engil, and José María Lopéz Piñol, CEO of Urbaser, as shareholders.

With a unique profile, SUMA is the reference organization in the national waste market. Currently operating from north to south of the country, the company names a group of about five dozen organizations, with activities in five countries, spread over four continents.
